A Magnetic Particle Testing (MPT) inspection machine is the most common non-destructive testing (NDT) device used to find flaws on the surface or just below the surface of metals that can be magnetized such as iron, steel, and cobalt alloys. The entire operation is based on a simple yet powerful principle of magnetism.
The first step is to magnetize the test specimen. After it has been magnetized, very fine iron particles are placed on its surface either as a dry powder or as a liquid suspension. The presence of a discontinuity (e.g. a crack or inclusion) will cause the magnetic field to be interrupted and result in a leakage of magnetic flux at the defect site. The leakage field attracts the magnetic particles very strongly and they get stuck there forming a visible indication that is in the shape and size of the flaw. The inspectors then analyze these indications under proper lighting, frequently employing ultraviolet (UV-A) lamps for fluorescent particles to boost contrast.
The mpt machines are trusted for their speed, portability, and that they are highly sensitive to even very small, hidden cracks. They are required for quality control and preventive maintenance in the most demanding sectors such as aerospace, automotive, oil and gas, and heavy fabrication. mpt machines, by providing rapid and reliable detection of flaws, not only help to maintain the structural integrity but also prevent catastrophic failures and thus maintain the highest safety standards in the manufacturing and infrastructure sectors.
